2026 Bommarito Automotive Group 500 Results

An injured foot sustained in a crash two weeks ago from the Indianapolis 500 would not impede Josef Newgarden as he led 53 laps and found his way to victory in Sunday night’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Worldwide Technology Raceway.

It is Newgarden’s second win of the 2026, both occurring at oval less than 1.3 miles in length (Phoenix) and he improves his track record to six victories in 11 starts on the 1.25-mile oval in Madison, Illinois.

The Team Penske driver also tied Al Unser Jr for ninth on the all-time wins list after notching his 34th INDYCAR
victory by .6613 of a second over Andretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson, who led a race-high 114 laps in his first podium finish of the season.

Team Penske now boasts 248 INDYCAR victories as they celebrate their 60th anniversary.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen also earned his first podium of 2026 a year after his first INDYCAR podium. In fourth, Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Rinus VeeKay earned his best finish of 2026, with Newgarden’s teammate Scott McLaughlin rounding out the Top Five.

Attrition would see Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Mick Schumacher finish best among the rookies in 16th.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader Alex Palou started on the pole for the fourth consecutive race but pit lane issues dropped him two laps down in 17th. His lead in the standings over Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood is now 49 halfway through the 2026 campaign.

Impending weather concerns moved the start of the race up by about 15 minutes.

Dennis Hauger of Dale Coyne Racing was unable to make the start of the race after his team discovered an oil leak and the rookie did not make his first start at WWTR. Palou held the early lead as teammate Kyffin Simpson was penalized for being out of position at the start and was forced to serve a drive-through penalty.

On Lap 48, Ericsson stormed his way to the lead around Palou just before the first cycle of pit stops began. Eight laps later, Arrow McLaren’s Nolan Siegel drifted up high and made heavy contact with the outside wall in Turn 1 following contact with Palou.

Following the Lap 64 restart, Ericsson continued to lead into the second round of pit stops. On Lap 114, Graham Rahal got loose entering Turn 4 and the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver spun and made heavy contact with the outside wall.

Rahal climbed from his car and finished 23rd following the early crash.

While under yellow, raindrops began to fall around the race track, prompting the red flag to be displayed on Lap 138. A consistent but light rain stopped the running for about a 40-minute period. Once the rain stopped and the tracks as cleared, the race was resumed at Lap 144. Newgarden made his way around Ericsson during the ensuing cycle of pit stops. On Lap 197, the race was halted for conditions again with Dixon leading the race.

Conditions improved and the caution flag was brought out. Dixon would be penalized for emergency service in a closed pit and forced to the back of the field. Palou would coast to hiss tall under the caution after running out of fuel.

Following the Lap 213 restart, Rasmussen took the fight to Newgarden as the swapped the lead multiple times in the next handful of laps. Newgarden would grab the lead on Lap 221 and not look back over the last 40 laps. Ericsson found his way around Rasmussen six laps later for the runner-up spot.

Further back in the field, rookie Caio Collet’s impressive run from 20th on the grid would come to a halt as the engine let go in his A.J. Foyt Racing entry and he finished 22nd, still nursing broken ribs from his Indianapolis 500 crash.

After pitting under the late caution, McLaughlin stormed his way up to fifth in his best finish since the season opener at St. Petersburg.

Throughout Sunday night’s 260-lap race, the lead changed hands 17 times between six drivers. Four cautions spanning 50 laps would slow the race down to a 134.070 mph average speed.
