In the second practice ahead of tomorrow’s GMR Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou topped the speed chart. With a best lap of 1m09.9383 (125.545 mph), the 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES Champion led the 45-minute practice.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard duplicated his performance from the opening session in second, .3197 of a second back of Palou.

After leading the first session, Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward was again the fastest Chevrolet, slotting in third. Rookie Marcus Armstrong made it two CGR drivers in the top four and was again best among the four drivers scheduled for their first race at IMS. The 2022 GMR Grand Prix winner Colton Herta rebounded from an oil fire in the last practice to finish 15th.

Herta’s former Andretti Autosport teammate Alexander Rossi finished 11th. The winner of the July Race here will look to give Arrow McLaren their first win of 2023 and second at this track. Simon Pagenaud won the inaugural running of this event in 2014, when the team ran as Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

Following a handful of mechanical issues during Friday’s opening practice, only one major issue hampered this session.

Helio Castroneves suffered a blown engine in his Meyer Shank Racing entry. The No. 06 will use the engine scheduled for Indianapolis 500 qualifying next weekend after the Honda power plant in his car expired during the session. MSR will need to make a quick turnaround in order to make this afternoon’s qualifying.
