Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood looks to continue his reign as top street course racer of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES at a track where he won a year ago. Kirkwood posted the best lap in Sunday morning’s 30-minute warmup. Kirkwood notched a best lap of 1m02.4051 (94.896 mph) on the 1.645-mile, nine-turn street circuit for today’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.
Kirkwood, the winner on the Arlington street circuit in March, starts in sixth today.
Seven days after winning the closest Indianapolis 500 ever, Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist was .6089 of a second back of Kirkwood and rolls off 16th.
After narrowly missing out on the Fast Six in Saturday’s qualifying, Arrow MClaren’s Pato O’Ward was best among the Chevrolets in third behind the Hondas of Kirkwood and Rosenqvist. Chevrolet has not won this race since it was moved to the downtown streets off Belle Isle Park in 2023.
Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin (starting third) and David Malukas (25th) completed the Top Five. Malukas will start in a backup car following a crash in qualifying.
Malukas is among five additional Chevrolet entries to undergo an engine change before today’s on-track running.
Pole sitter Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was eighth in the session as he looks to extend his points lead
Arrow Mclaren’s Christian Lundgaard (starting fifth) changed engines before qualifying, with teammates O’Ward and Nolan Siegel changing power units as well. Josef Newgarden of Team Penske also changed engines as had the Juncos Hollinger Rocing duo of Rinus VeeKay and Sting Rayn Robb earlier in the weekend.
Caio Collet of A.J. Foyt Racing was best Among the rookies in 16th.
