Kyle Kirkwood and his Andretti Global team continued their dominance of temporary street circuits on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES calendar. The 2025 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix winner notched the best lap of the session with a 1m01.8145 (95.803 mph) on the 1.645-mile, nine-turn Michigan track.
Teammate Will Power finished .1308 of a second back. Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward continued to lead the way for the Chevrolet brigade in third.
After leading Friday afternoon’s practice, NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader Alex Palou was fourth in his Chip Ganassi Racing entry. Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin rounded out the Top Five. Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist of Meyer Shank Racing was sixth as he looks to become the first driver since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000 to win the week following his triumph at Indy.
Caio Collet of A.J. Foyt Racing was best among the rookies in 19th.
Following a brief red flag caused by debris, the first major incident of the weekend occurred. Entering Turn 6, the No. 76 Juncos Hollinger Racing entry of Rinus VeeKay had the Chevrolet engine in his machine let go.
While nursing an injury to his left foot sustained in last week, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden spun in Turn 4 but continued on. Last year’s race winner Kye Kirkwood set the fastest lap of the “all-skate” portion of the morning practice despite right-rear toe link damage following light contact with the wall.
As the first of two group sessions began, engine trouble hit another Chevrolet driver. Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard suffered the failure and practice would come to an abrupt end for the winner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course event three weeks ago. He was the only driver not to improve upon their best lap from yesterday afternoon’s practice.
