On Monday morning, HMD Motorsports and A.J. Foyt Racing announced Katherine Legge will drive the No. 11 Dallara-Chevrolet at next month’s 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.
“We worked incredibly hard to be back at this year’s Indianapolis 500, and I don’t take a single moment of it for granted,” the Guilford, England native said.
“I’m beyond grateful to e.l.f. Cosmetics for believing that women deserve to take up space in every arena—including this one.
Legge will team with full-time drivers Santino Ferrucci and Caio Collet (Rookie) for the race.
“Every time I return, I gain a deeper appreciation for what it takes—not just to compete here, but to earn the opportunity to be here in the first place. I’m reminded that I’m a small part of this enormously storied event,” Legge emphasized in Monday’s announcement.
Legge is the 33rd and final entry for next month’s race, capping the field without any driver at risk of getting bumped from the field and not qualifying for the race.
In four previous appearances in the race, Legge has a best start of 29th in 2023 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Her best finish was 22nd during her rookie year with Dragon Racing. In 47 previous starts across ChampCar and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, her best finish was sixth (Milwaukee 2006 and Las Vegas Street Circuit 2007). Her previous best start was seventh at Fontana in 2012.

She also holds the distinction of the fastest four-lap qualifying run by a woman at the Indianapolis 500 (231.070 mph), a record set in 2023.
A.J. Foyt Racing will field a third entry at the Indianapolis 500 for the first time since 2022. Legge is the second woman to drive for the organization (Tatiana Calderon ran seven races in 2022) and the first to run an oval.
“AJ Foyt Racing has always been about giving racers a real shot,” team president Larry Foyt said in Monday’s release.
“The collaboration with our partners at HMD and e.l.f. Cosmetics has helped bring this program to the grid. Katherine has earned this opportunity, and we’re committed to giving her a strong, competitive platform.”
Foyt previously entered a car for Janet Guthrie in the 1976 race but she failed to qualify. A year later, Guthrie made her first of three starts, the first woman to run the Indianapolis 500. Foyt won that 1977, becoming the first of what is now a quartet of four-time winners.
HMD Motorsports, founded by Henry Malukas, the father of Team Penske’s David Maluaks, has run the INDY NXT (previously Indy Lights) by Firestone series dating back to 2019. Last year, the organization partnered with Foyt in the series.
This year, Alessandro de Tullio has won at Barber Motorsports Park (Race 2) and started on pole twice (Arlington and Barber-Race 1) as driver of the effort’s No. 14 entry.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for HMD Motorsports and an incredibly proud moment for everyone involved with our organization,” said HMD Motorsports President Mike Maurini.
“We have worked hard to establish HMD as a leader in driver development, and to now be part of an Indianapolis 500 program alongside AJ Foyt Racing and Katherine Legge is something very special.
“Katherine brings a wealth of experience, AJ Foyt Racing brings unmatched history, and together we believe we have assembled a program that can make a strong impression throughout the Month of May.”
Legge will be on track for the series’ Open Test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday.
