Ahead of this afternoon’s race, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden ran the fastest lap during Sunday’s 30-minute warmup for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. The 2022 race winner and 2021 pole winner turned a best lap of 1m07.9685 (104.237 mph).
Newgarden, who starts 13th, was the lone Chevrolet in the Top Six, followed by five Honda-powered cars. He was also the only driver in the 25-car field to run his best lap of the weekend during this morning’s practice.
2015 and 2024 Long Beach winner Scott Dixon was .1794 of a second back of Newgarden and starts in sixth for today’s 90-lap race on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit in California.
Pole sitter Felix Rosenqvist of Meyer Shank Racing was third, followed by Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou, who starts third in search of a second consecutive NTT INDYCAR SERIES victory and his first at Long Beach.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal ended the session fifth and starts 10th as he looks to build on a third place finish last time out at Barber Motorsports Park. A.J. Foyt Racing’s Caio Collet was fastest among the rookies in 14th.
Points leader Kylee Kirkwood of Andretti Global ran into hybrid issues during the session that left him 20th overall. Kirkwood starts fourth in search of his third Long Beach victory in four years.
Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’War was also limited after heel pad issues on his car. O’Ward starts in second for today’s race.
