Looking to make his 22nd and final career “500” start, Arrow McLaren’s Tony Kanaan led the morning practice session ahead of Qualifying Day 1 for the 107th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.
The 2013 race winner and 2005 pole winner notched a best lap of 233.026 mph (38.6223) on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Teammate Alexander Rossi was .0203 of a second back, as the 2016 winner makes his first appearance at the “500” with his new team.
In all, 10 of the 34 cars vying to be in the 33-car field took to the track. As is often the case, the majority of the field opted to sit out the hour-long session, which was split into 30-minute sessions. Despite the limited number of cars on track, some focus was placed on cars that worked to solve mechanical gremlins from yesterday’s practice.
After thrashing overnight to prepare a new chassis, Juncos Hollinger Racing was able to have Callum Ilott and the No. 77 on track for the morning practice. Three Honda drivers (Dixon, Palou and Harvey) went to a new engine after various issues late in Friday’s practice. All three turned laps at full speed in preparation for qualifying. Palou boasted the best four-lap average of those participating (232.713).

At 11:00, four-lap qualification attempts will begin and last until 6:00 p.m. When Saturday’s attempts are finished, the Top 30 cars will be locked into the Field of 33. Positions 13-30 will not run again on Sunday.
The 12 fastest drivers will advance to Sunday’s “Fast 12 Shootout” and look to make the Top 6 who will run for the first two rows.
In between determining the first four rows, the 11th row will qualify and one driver will get bumped.
