Picking up where he left off yesterday, Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward was atop the speed chart yet again. In the second practice for Sunday’s Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, the points leader notched a best lap of 1m05.9982 (107.348 mph).

The driver of the No. 5 Dallara-Chevrolet was .0167 of a second in front of Andretti Autosport’s Kyle Kirkwood, the fastest Honda. Kirkwood’s teammates Romain Grosjean and Colton Herta, along with Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin, complete the Top Five.

Defending race winner Josef Newgarden ended the morning 10th, with 2022 series champion Will Power in 14th. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Marcus Armstrong was 15th, best among the four rookies competing this weekend.

Less than four minutes into the session, Junco Hollinger Racing’s Callum Ilott suffered the first major incident of the weekend. The driver of the No. 77 skipped the curb on entry of Turn 5. Although he climbed from his car, the damage to his Dallara-Chevrolet prevented him from continuing on before qualifying. Three minutes later, the red flag was brought out again for a Turn 5 accident.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus VeeKay would suffer a similar accident to Ilott. Fortunately for the No.21 team, VeeKay was able to drive back to pit lane and the ECR are repaired his damaged machine.

The remainder of the 45 minutes on track were run incident-free. For all 27 teams, the focus now shifts to qualifying for tomorrow afternoon’s 85-lap race.
