Practice 2 Results Combined Practice Results Qualifying Groups
Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard was quickest in another eventful practice in the lead-up to qualifying for tomorrow’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
Lundgaard, who started fifth and finished eighth in last year’s 100-lap race on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn Florida street circuit, ran a best lap of 1m01.6157 (105.168 mph) during the second of a pair of 10-minute group sessions, .
Second to the Chevrolets again was Meyer Shank Racing, with Marcus Armstrong finishing the morning .0435 of a second off Lundgaard’s best lap. Defending race winner and NTT INDYCAR SERIES Champion Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was third as Kyle Kirkwood in fourth and Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi in fifth.
After leading yesterday’s practice. Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin was sixth. Dale Coyne Racing’s Dennis Hauger was best among the rookies in 13th.
Track conditions would again bite another veteran driver early on in the session. After suffering a front brake lock-up, Andretti Global’s Will Power made heavy contact with the outside wall in Turn 10, sustaining major damage to the right-front of his machine.
Power would be released from the INDYCAR Medical Unit but his team will have significant repairs to make before qualifying this afternoon. He would be the only driver in the 25-car field not to record an official lap time in the session.
While the course would continue drying, another driver found trouble in the 40-minute “all skate” session. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen spun in Turn 2 and made contact with the inside wall between there and Turn 3. Rasmussen sustained light front-end damage but climbed from his car and was released from the INDYCAR Medical Unit.
Rasmussen (1m03.5018-102.044) would finish 24th on the lap sheet.
