Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden led opening practice for Sunday’s Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250 on Saturday morning.
Newgarden posted a best lap of 161.066 mph (22.6864 seconds) on the 1.015-mile oval in West Alis, Wisconsin. Last year he won pole for the second raced of the doubleheader but crashed on the first lap. His best finish at the Milwaukee Mile was fifth in 2014 and 2015.
Finishing .0737 of a second back of Newgarden was 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES Champion Alex Palou, who placed his Chip Ganassi Racing Honda in second.
After earning the organization’s first podium in Race 1 of last year’s doubleheader, Conor Daly placed his Juncos Hollinger Racing car in third. Dale Coyne Racing’s Rinus VeeKay and Marcus Ericsson of Andretti Global rounded out the Top Five.
Dale Coyne Racing’s Jacob Abel was best among the rookies. This weekend, Abel’s car. number has ben changed from 51 to 50 and has donned the iconic Miller Lite colors ran by Max Papis and Bobby Rahal from 1997-2000 in celebration of Miller’s 50th anniversary.
Early in the session, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Louis Foster would see his No. 45 entry in the garage early with engine issues. RLLR changed out the engine and he will be given a nine-spot grid penalty for Sunday’s race.
Simpson and Dixon assessed nine-spot grid penalties
Befor Saturday morning’s practice, INDYCAR announced penalties for the No. 8 and No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing entries of Kyffin Simpson and Scott Dixon.
The entries were in violation of:
Rule 16.1.2.3.2. A fifth (5th) Engine is eligible to earn Engine Manufacturer points if a Full Season Entrant has completed the Full Season Entrant Engine Mileage with its first four (4) Engines. Otherwise, a fifth (5th) or more Engine does not earn Engine Manufacturer points and will be considered an Unapproved Engine change-out.
According to Rule 16.1.6.1.2., the penalty is a six-position starting grid penalty on road and street course events and nine positions at oval events and will be served at the series’ next event, which is the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250 Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Milwaukee Mile.
