In the second practice for Sunday’s BITNILE.com Grand Prix of Portland, Colton Herta led the way. During the 45-minute on-track session, the Andretti Global driver notched a best lap of 58.4238 seconds (121.019 mph) on the 1.964-mile, 12-turn Oregon permanent road course.
Herta, who started on the pole in his first Portland start (2019), has two fourth-place finishes at this venue (2019 and 2024).
Finishing .0293 of a second back of Herta was Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou, who can wrap up his fourth NTT INDYCAR SERIES Championship this weekend. Palou’s teammate Scott Dixon completed a 1-2-3 finish by Honda-powered cars in the practice.
Two-time Portland winner Will Power (2019 and 2024) was best among the Chevrolets in fourth as he looks for a second pole at Portland (2018). Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Devlin DeFrancesco was fifth on the morning.
After leading Friday’s practice, Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard was seventh, while DeFrancesco’s teammate Louis Foster was the fastest rookie in eighth. 18 of 27 drivers improved on their best time from yesterday’s practice.
Lundgaard and Ferrucci penalized
Prior to this morning’s session, the No. 7 Arrow McLaren entry (Christian Lundgaard) and the No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing entry (Santino Ferrucci) were assessed six-position grid penalties.
Ferrucci’s engine was found to have a cracked head, per Fox Sports’ Georgia Henneberry. Lundgaard’s engine change followed data assessment from Chevrolet, per Kevin Lee of Fox Sports.
Per INDYCAR’s release “The entries were in violation of:
Rule 16.1.2.3.2. A fifth (5th) Engine is eligible to earn Engine Manufacturer points if a Full Season Entrant has completed the Full Season Entrant Engine Mileage with its first four (4) Engines. Otherwise, a fifth (5th) or more Engine does not earn Engine Manufacturer points and will be considered an Unapproved Engine change-out.
According to Rule 16.1.6.1.2., the penalty is a six-position starting grid penalty on road and street course events and nine positions at oval events and will be served at the series’ next event, which is the BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland presented by askROI Sunday, Aug. 10 at PIR.”
