Sukup INDYCAR Race Weekend Preview

July 11, 2025

This weekend, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES heads to Newton, Iowa and the .894-mile Iowa Speedway for the Sukup INDYCAR Race Weekend.

It will be the 22nd and 23rd races at the oval since its 2007 debut on the schedule.

This weekend’s 11th and 12th races of 2025 mark the lone doubleheader event of the season as well.

Each of Iowa Speedway’s last four appearances on the schedule have been doubleheaders.

Before the on-track action begins, here’s a look at the major storylines.

Headlines

On Sunday, Scott Dixon took advantage of a rare mistake from Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Alex Palou to win for the seventh time at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Dixon’s first win of 2025 was the 59th in his career.

He now goes to a track where he’s winless in 21 appearances with four podium finishes.

Palou has earned podium finishes in Race 2 of each of the last two doubleheaders but like Dixon has never won at Iowa. CGR’s last win at Iowa came 16 years ago with Dario Franchitti.

While Team Penske is tied with Andretti Global for most wins at the venue (7), they have yet to see the top step of the podium in 2025.

Last year, Scott McLaughlin and Will Power earned victories in the doubleheader, the track’s first after a partial repave in the offseason.

Josef Newgarden swept the 2023 races, two of his record six at Iowa.

The lone driver outside Ganassi to win in 2025, Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood won his first oval INDYCAR race last month at WWTR (Gateway) but is still looking for a podium at Iowa after six previous races.

Kirkwood notched his best start at Iowa in Race 3 last year (12th) and made his career-best Iowa start in Race 1 (7th). Andretti Global’s last of seven wins was in 2015 with Ryan Hunter-Reay.
