Dixon held Palou off by .4201 of a second to win for the seventh time at the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course. It is Dixon’s 59th career victory, second only to A.J. Foyt’s 67 all-time.

Heading into Turn Four past the alternate starting line on the opening lap, Josef Newgarden suffered a rear-wheel lockup that set him spinning into the inside sand trap. The Team Penske driver would fall out of contention from the damage. He would return to the race later on to complete a lap but finished last in the 27-car field.
PREMA Racing’s Callum Ilott and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal would also be involved but continued on.

On Lap 12, Penske’s misfortunes continued as Will Power suffered a left-rear header fire on pit lane and would be forced out of the race.
Palou would lead until his first pit stop on Lap 28. On Lap 31, the caution would fly again for the stalled car of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen. After running out of fuel, the No. 21 ECR machine was towed back into the garage.
From the Lap 35 restart, Palou would stretch out his lead before making the Lap 57 stop. On Lap 61, his teammates Dixon and Simpson pitted. Simpson’s career day unraveled when he stalled on pit road then struck one of the crew members on Rinus VeeKay’s No. 18.
Palou would make his final stop on Lap 72 and would lead until he bobbled in Turn 9 on Lap 86. Dixon was quick to capitalize on the rare mistake from his teammate. Dixon held off any further challenge for the historic victory.
The race would tie Mid-Ohio’s previous record with eight lead changes (1988, 2007 and 2017) among four drivers. Slowed by a pair of cautions for a total of eight laps, the average speed of the race was 111.166 mph.
