On the heels of his first INDYCAR oval victory, Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood posted the best lap in Friday afternoon’s 75-minute opening practice for the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America.
In the waning moments, Kirkwood notched a best lap of 1m44.9881 (137.638 mph) on the 4.014-mile, 14-turn permanent road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
Kirkwood has just two top five finishes on permanent road courses (Road America and Laguna Seca-2024) in his NTT INDYCAR SERIES career.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Devlin DeFrancesco was.1533 of a second back of Kirkwood, giving Honda a 1-2 finish on the day. Two-time and defending race winner Will Power of Team Penske was the fastest of the Chevrolet entrants in third.
Power’s teammate Josef Newgarden, himself a two-time winner at Road America, was fourth after his teammate, with Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard in fifth.
Rahal Letterman Lanigian Racing’s Louis Foster was best among this year’s trio of rookies in eighth. Points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing wasn’t ninth as he seeks his third win at Road America (2021, 2023).
During the session, incidents would stop the running on two separate occasions.
With less than 20 minutes remaining, Ferrucci spun off course and stalled between Turns 13 and 14. After he was unable to re-fire on his own, the red flag was thrown and the safety crew went pout to push his car back on track.
With less than two minutes remaining, Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi spun in Turn 1, prompting another red flag. Rossi was able to continue on after his car re-fired.
