After rain forced a delay of more than two hours, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES htii the track to begin the race weekend for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Worldwide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois.
Team Penske would lead the way as Josef Newgarden posted a best lap of 178.243 mph (25.2465 seconds) on the 1.25-mile oval. Newgarden leads all drivers with five victories, including four of the last five. His last victory was at this race a year ago.
Teammate Scott McLaughlin, who has won pole for this race the last two years, was second this afternoon, .0132 of a second back of his teammate. David Malukas, the 2022 runner-up in this race, was third. His A.J. Foyt Racing team shares a technical alliance with Penske.
Points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was best among the Hondas in fourth. He’s yet to finish on the podium at Gateway in six previous starts. His best effort was a fourth-place a year ago.
Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward, a runner-up here on three occasions (2020 Race 2, 2021 and 2023) was fifth. Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was best among the rookies in the field in 19th.
