2024 pole winner and track record holder Colton Herta continued Andretti Global’s hot start to the weekend at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. Herta posted best lap of 1m01.7823 (95.853 mph) on the 1.645-mile, 9-turn street circuit.
Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske was the best Chevrolet following the Honda of Herta in the 27-car field with a lap .1172 of a second back of Herta. After posting the best lap during Friday’s practice, Herta’s teammate Kyle Kirkwood was third on the lap sheet. Kirkwood was the winner on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ last visit to a temporary circuit (Long Beach).
Kirkwood is the only driver to finish ahead of points leader Alex Palou in a race this season.
Callum Ilott was fourth as his PREMA Racing team makes their debut on the streets of Detroit. Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was best among the rookie class in fifth.
Palou was 12th as he looks for a Modern Era record-tying fourth consecutive victory. He would also be the first driver since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000 to win the following race after his Indianapolis 500 victory. Montoya also drive for Chip Ganassi Racing when he accomplished this a quarter-century ago.
21 of 27 drivers posted their best lap in this practice. The focus now turns to qualifying later today.
