Practice Results

Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood led the way in opening practice for this weekend’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. Kirkwood posted a best lap of 1m01.7509 during the session, which featured a 45-minute run for the full 27-car field and two 10-minute sessions split between pit lane spots.

In three previous starts on the 1.645-mile, nine-turn street circuit, Kirkwood earned his best effort last year when he started sixth and finished in fourth, leading 24 laps.

Following Kirkwood’s Honda on the lap chart were the Team Penske trio of Scott McLaughlin, Will Power and Josef Newgarden. Power and Kirkwood made contact early in the session, damaging the gearbox cover on Kirkwood’s car.

Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard would make it four Chevrolets after Kirkwood’s Honda-powered entry.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Louis Foster was eighth in the session, best among the four driver making their first start on the streets of Detroit. Foster leads Robert Shwartzman by a point in the rookie standings.

Following his first Indianapolis 500 victory, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou was 15th despite being one of a handful ofd drivers to overshoot Turn 1. Palou, who leads the NTT INDYCAR SERIES points by 118 over Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward, won the 2023 race in Detroit from pole.

Aside from the handful of brief off-track excursion’s Friday’s session was run without incident.
