Final Practice Results Combined Practice Results
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden would lead the final practice ahead of Sunday’s 109th Indianapolis 500. Newgarden, who is seeking an unprecedented third consecutive victory, notched a best lap of 225.687 mph (39.8782 seconds) during the two-hour session.
After a penalty due to qualifying infractions, Newgarden will start 32nd.
Fellow two-time winner Takuma Sato of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was the fastest Honda entry to Newgarden’s Chevrolet. Sato’s best lap was .0481 of a second behind Newgarden.
2008 winner Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing was third and will look to join Newgarden and Sato 17 years to the day of his lone triumph at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It would be the longest span and most starts between victories by any driver. Sato’s teammate Devlin DeFrancesco was fourth and starts his third “500” in 16th.
Newgarden’s teammate and 2018 winner Will Power was fifth on the day. Like Newgarden, he was mpvoed to 33rd following the penalties. The strategists for both drivers, Tim Cindric and Ron Ruzewski, as well as teammate Scott McLaughlin’s Kyle Moyer, departed Team Penske on Tuesday following the penalties.
McLaughlin will start tenth and was 27th in the session.
RLLR would also boast the fastest of the field of 33’s trio of rookies. Louis Foster was 22nd and starts his first “500” in 20th. Pole winner and fellow rookie Robert Shwartzman was 29th. Shwartzman and Callum Ilott (20th) will drive for PREMA Racing in the organization’s first “500”.
Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi had water pump issues on his entry and saw his practice curtailed. The 2016 race winner starts 12th for his tenth “500”. Graham Rahal would have the Honda engine in his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing entry let go and be forced to swap it out.
Rahal starts 28th in his 17th “500”. That would not be the end of engine issues on the day. With less than 45 minutes remaining, Ryan Hunter-Reay’s engine would also let go.
A massive fire erupted from the back of his Dreyer and Reinbold Racing entry. He will start 25th on the 11th anniversary of his lone victory in the race.
Fourth and last to experience issues during final practice was Takuma Sato of RLLR. The 2017 and 2020 winner lost power on the back straightway and slowed to a stop.
