Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden ran the fastest lap during the final warmup for Saturday’s Sonsio Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.

Newgarden, who won Race 1 of the Harvest Grand Prix in 2020 on the road course, posted a best lap of 1m10.5606 (124.438 mph) on the 2.439-mille, 14-turn road course in Speedway, Indiana.

He will start in sixth for today’s 85-lap race. Newgarden and PREMA Racing’s rookie Robert Shwartzman (12th), who starts last on the 27-car grid, were the only drivers to record their best lap of the weekend in the 25-minute session.

Arrow McLaren’/s Christian Lundgaard, who has. finished runner-up here twice, was second on the board, .0671 of a second back of his Chevrolet stablemate. He will start 14th in the race. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Honda occupied the remaining three spots in the Top Five.

Scott Dixon was third and starts 16th today as he looks for a third win here. Points leader Alex Palou was fourth after earning his second consecutive pole yesterday. A victory today would give Palou a third win in as many tries at the event. He would also improve to four wins in the opening five races.

After equaling his career-best start of tenth, Kyffiin Simpson rounded out the Top Five.

Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was 11th, best among the rookies. He starts third after he and teammates Graham Rahal (second) and Devlin DeFrancesco (fifth) put all three cars in the Fast Six for the first time.

A.J. Foyt Racing’s Santino Ferrucci brought out the lone red flag of the session after his engine failed less than five minutes into the session. Dale Coyne Racing’s Jacob Abel would not turn a lap in the session either.

The Andretti Global duo of Colton Herta and Kyle Kirkwood also ran laps but were 24th and 25th following technical issues. Jack Harvey of Fox Sports reported a “shifting issue” to be the culprit for Herta.
