Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou led the way in Sunday morning’s 25-minute warmup at the Thermal Club in preparation for this afternoon’s Thermal Club INDYCAR GRAND PRIX.
Palou, who won last year’s $1 Million Challenge at the venue, posted a best lap of 1m40.3667 (110.009 mph) on the 3.067-mile, 17-turn permanent road course in Thermal, California. He was also fastest in Friday afternoon’s opening practice. He was one of six drivers to post his best lap of the weekend in this session.
Just as they did in the season opener in St. Petersburg, teammate Scott Dixon and Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden followed Palou.
Palou starts the 65-lap race from third on the grid. Dixon, who finished .460 of a second off his teammate starts 11th in his Honda-powered entry, Newgarden will roll off 17th in his Dallara-Chevrolet.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal was fourth and is 18th on the grid. PREMA Racing’s Callum Ilott was fifth and starts 22nd.
Rahal’s teammate Louis Foster was the best among the three rookies in seventh and will start 10th.
Pole sitter Pato O’ Ward of Arrow McLaren was 17th, while teammate and outside pole sitter Christian Lundgaard was 14th. Lundgaard was fastest in second practice yesterday morning.
