Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood capped off 2024 with his first career NTT P1 Award on an oval in qualifying for Sunday’s 206-lap Big Machine Music City Grand Prix.
The Jupiter, Florida native, who won last year’s race on the streets of Nashville, posted a two-lap average of 201.520 mph on the 1.33-mile Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tennessee.
It is the second pole of his NTT INDYCAR SERIES career. He previously started on the pole in his first career win at Long Beach in 2023.
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden was the only driver besides Kirkwood to average over 201 mph and his Chevrolet will be on the front row alongside Kirkwood.
Newgarden’s teammate Will Power lines up fourth, best among the trio of championship contenders. Teammate Scott McLaughlin was ninth and points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was 15th but they will face nine-place grid penalties for engine changes.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Linus Lundqvist, who clinched Rookie of the Year honors two weeks ago, qualified tenth.
A.J. Foyt Racing’s Sting Ray Robb lost an engine during his qualifying attempt and was unable to complete a second lap. He was relegated to 26th on the grid as a result.
Following his crash during Saturday morning’s practice session, Arrow McLaren was unable to repair Nolan Siegel’s No. 6 entry and he will start last on the 27-car grid.
