2024 Hy-vee Milwaukee Mile 250 Race 2 Results

Scott McLaughlin would find his way back to the lead during the late stages of Sunday’s Hy-vee Milwaukee Mile 250 Race 2. After starting in second, the Team Penske driver led a race-high 85 of 250 laps.

After he and the leaders pitted for new tires during the final caution, McLaughlin held off fellow New Zealander Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing to win at the Milwaukee Mile.

It is McLaughlin’s seventh career NTT INDYCAR SERIES victory as he ties Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward and teammate Will Power with three race wins in 2024. McLaughlin also helped Chevrolet sweep both poles and race victories for the weekend at the 1.015-mile oval in West Allis, Wisconsin.

Andretti Global’s Colton Herta would follow Honda stablemate Dixon on the podium in third. They both improved 15 spots after starting 17th and 18th respectively.

In fourth, Santino Ferrucci matched his Saturday finish and best result of the season.

Following a race-ending crash late in Saturday’s race, Andretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson rebounded to finish in fifth.

Power would finish 10th ahead of points leader Alex Palou in 19th following a chaotic day full of attrition.

With a single race to go, Palou’s lead over Power is just 33 points. McLaughlin is 50 points back, meaning he would be mathematically eliminated as long as Palou starts the next race.

Race Recap

Calamity struck two of the race’s major contenders before a lap was turned under green flag conditions. Championship leader Alex Palou would stall during the pace laps with battery issues. Palou would return to competition, albeit 29 laps down.

After running the first four laps under caution, the field was prepared to begin with the green flag on Lap 6. The start was waved-off by Race Control as the back of the field was not in alignment.

Up front saw more issues as pole sitter Josef Newgarden was hit from behind by Linus Lundqvist and Marcus Armstrong of Chip Ganassi Racing.

Newgarden would again drop out of the race, this time without completing a lap under green. Armstrong would fall out too and Lundqvist was given a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact.

McLaughlin would hold the lead as the race saw its first green flag run begin on Lap 17. Power would find his way to the lead on Lap 45.

After the first cycle of pit stops, the caution flew again on Lap 63 as David Malukas slowed on the front straightaway. The Meyer Shank Racing driver would coast to a stop between Turns 1 and 2.

After winning in a dominant performance on Saturday, Pato O’Ward would fall victim to misfortune like his peers. On Lap 88, the Arrow McLaren driver fell out of the race with gearbox issues. Teammate Nolan Siegel retired from the race with a similar issue earlier in the afternoon.

On lap 114, A.J. Foyt Racing’s Sting Ray Robb spun exiting Turn 2, prompting the fourth caution of the afternoon.

Soon after the restart on Lap 124, the carnage would continue. Graham Rahal would crash out of the race following contact from Ed Carpenter Racing rookie Christian Rasmussen entering Turn 3. The rookie would be assessed a drive-through penalty for the incident.

On Lap 132, Power spun entering Turn 4 on the restart and would fall a lap down following multiple trips onto pit lane.

After staying out during the cautions, Rossi would give up the lead on Lap 163. On Lap 165, Herta would inherit the lead after McLaughlin opted to pit.

Just before Lap 200, the final round of pit stops would begin. After a fierce battle over multiple laps, McLaughlin would find his way around Herta for the lead on Lap 218.

On Lap 222, Robb would stop in Turn 2, prompting another caution. Dixon would find his way to second as Rossi fell back to sixth. Up front, McLaughlin would hold on for the victory in the penultimate race of 2024.

The race featured a track record 13 lead changes among seven drivers. Six cautions flag periods spanning 57 laps slowed the race to a 120.334 mph average speed.
