Team Penske continued its dominant oval run on Saturday as their drivers tool pole for both races of the Hy-vee Milwaukee Mile 250s.
Scott McLaughlin took his NTT INDYCAR SERIES-leading fourth pole of 2024 with a lap of 162.341 mph (22.5082 seconds) on the 1.015-mile oval in West Allis, Wisconsin. It is his 10th career pole as he is one of 22 drivers making their first start in Milwaukee.
Teammate Josef Newgarden qualified second but faces a nine-place grid penalty for an unapproved engine change. He is one of five drivers that will face a penalty.
Meyer Shank Racing’s David Malukas will start in second as a result, just as he and McLaughlin did at Gateway two weeks ago.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Linus Lundqvist was the fastest rookie and starts in third for Saturday’s 250-lap race.
Newgarden starts on the pole for Sunday’s race with a lap of 160.983 mph (22.698 seconds). McLaughlin. Power starts fourth between the CGR duo of Marcus Armstrong and the aforementioned Lundqvist.
This is Newgarden’s 18th career pole and first since the 2024 season opener in St. Petersburg. He was also the pole sitter for the series’ last Milwaukee appearance in 2015.
Points leader Alex Palou starts 13th and 10th in this weekend’s races. If he leaves the weekend in possession of a lead greater than 54 points, he will have clinched his third Championship.
Two more engine penalties assessed
INDYCAR officials have announced a nine-position starting grid penalty for the entries of No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing and No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing for unapproved engine changes following the Friday, Aug. 30 practice at the Milwaukee Mile.
The teams were in violation of:
Rule 16.1.2.3.2. A fifth (5th) Engine is eligible to earn Engine Manufacturer points if a Full Season Entrant has completed the Full Season Entrant Engine Mileage with its first four (4) Engines. Otherwise, a fifth (5th) or more Engine does not earn Engine Manufacturer points and will be considered an Unapproved Engine change-out.
According to Rule 16.1.6.1.2., the penalty is a six-position starting grid penalty on road and street course events and nine positions at oval events and will be served at the series’ next race, which is the Hy-Vee Milwaukee Mile 250s Race 1 today, Aug. 31 at the Milwaukee Mile.
