Picking up where he left off in Friday’s practice, Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin was again fastest in the second practice for the BitNile.com Grand Prix of Portland.
McLaughlin, who won the 2022 race from the pole, notched a best lap of 58.8605 seconds (120.121 mph) on the 1.964-mile, 12-turn Portland International Raceway.
David Maluklas of Meyer Shank Racing finished the 45-minute session as the fastest Honda-powered entry in second, .0263 of a second off McLaughlin’s Chevrolet.
Mclaughlin’s teammate Josef Newgarden was third of the 28-car field, with Andretti Global’s Colton Herta and Arrow McLaren’s Alexander Rossi completing the Top 5.
Points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was 13th and Nolan Siegel of Arrow McLaren was the fastest rookie in 18th.
The session was slowed by three red flags, with two prompted by separate incidents early in the running. Less than 3 minutes into the session, Will Power veered off course. The 2018 Portland winner slid to a halt in Turn 12 and was restarted with the assistance of the AMR INDYCAR SAFETY TEAM.
Around 10 minutes later, Sting Ray Robb of A.J. Foyt Racing spun off course in the same area as Power. Robb would make light contact with the inside tire barrier near Turn 11 and 12.
With less than 10 minutes remaining, Toby Sowery would stall his Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing entry in Turn, leading to yet another red flag, albeit a short one as he would continue on without assistance.
