Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin was fastest in Friday afternoon’s opening practice for this weekend’s BitNile.com Grand Prix of Portland. The 2022 pole and race winner notched a best lap of 58.3669 seconds-121.137 mph.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou, who leads the NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings and has won twice in Portland (2021 and 2023), was second, best among the Hondas following McLaughlin’s Chevrolet.
Palou’s teammate Marcus Armstrong was third with Arrow McLaren’s Alexander Rossi fourth and Scott Dixon making it three CGR entries in the Top 5.
Rookie of the Year leader Linus Lundqvist would also carry the flag for CGR as the fastest rookie in the field.
Juri Vips, who is making his first INDYCAR start of 2024, was 20th overall in a fourth Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing entry.
The 75 minute practice at the 1.964-mile, 12-turn Portland International Raceway was split into threes sessions. First, a 45-minute practice with all 28 cars in the field eligible.
Rossi would lead the opening 45-minute session with a best lap of 58.6705 seconds (120.510 mph). Following that segment and a 10-minute break, the 28-car field was split into groups of 14 for alternating 10-minute sessions.
In the first group run, McLaughlin was quickest while Chip Ganassi Racing’s Marcus Armstrong was fastest during the second group. (58.6095-120.636).
Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Conor Daly was limited to just four laps with a reported fuel pressure issue.
Three engine penalties announced
Prior to Friday afternoon’s practice, penalties were announced for the No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (Graham Rahal), No. 27 Andretti Global (Kyle Kirkwood) and No. 66 Meyer Shank Racing (David Maluaks) entries. Per INDYCAR
“The teams were in violation of:
Rule 16.1.2.3.2. A fifth (5th) Engine is eligible to earn Engine Manufacturer points if a Full Season Entrant has completed the Full Season Entrant Engine Mileage with its first four (4) Engines. Otherwise, a fifth (5th) or more Engine does not earn Engine Manufacturer points and will be considered an Unapproved Engine change-out.
According to Rule 16.1.6.1.2., the penalty is a six-position starting grid penalty on road and street course events and nine positions at oval events and will be served at the series’ next event, which is the BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland Sunday, Aug. 25 at Portland International Raceway.”
