Qualifying Results Provisional Starting Lineup
For the second year in a row, Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin won pole for the Bomamrito Automotive Group 500 at Worldwide Technology Raceway.
After he incurred a nine-place grid penalty last year, the New Zealander gets to start tomorrow night’s 260-lap race from the front of the 27-car field. McLaughlin posted a two-lap average of 179.972 mph and earned his fourth pole of 2024, most in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES this year. It is the ninth pole of his career and third on an oval.
In 2022, McLaughlin started fourth and finished third, leading 12 laps, the best of his previous three starts at the 1.25-mile, Madison, Illinois oval.
Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist was second-quickest but has a grid penalty which drops him to ninth. Teammate David Malukas, who led the opening practice, will move to second after posting the next-fastest two-lap average to his teammate.
Rosenqvist’s 180.028 mph first lap (25.4428 seconds) was the best in the field and he was the only driver to eclipse 180 mph during the session.
Points leader Alex Palou was seventh but also faces a nine-spot grid penalty. Teammate Marcus Armstrong was 13th, best among drivers making their debut at the track. Linus Lundqvist of CGR was 19th, leading the way among the Rookie of the Year contenders. Scott Dixon, 2020 Race 1 and 2023 race winner, qualified 10th but faces the same penalty as Palou.
Andretti Global’s Colton Herta made contact with the outside wall in Turn 2, damaging the rear wing of his No.26 entry. He finished the second lap of his qualifying attempt and slotted in 25th, slowest among the drivers to complete their run. Prior to his contact, he was seven thousandths of a second off the pole run.
Dale Coyne Racing’s Jack Harvey experienced reportedMGU (Motor Generator Unit) issues and did not complete his run. He would later post on X that an alarm went off on the wheel.
Teammate Katherine Legge did not pass technical inspection and Conor Daly was first on the board in his Juncos Hollinger Racing debut-177.126 mph.
