Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward notched the quickest lap during Saturday morning’s practice session for The Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. O’Ward turned a best lap of 1m05.9862 (123.189 mph) on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course in Lexington, Ohio.
2015 race winner and Ohio native Graham Rahal was best among the Hondas in second, .0577 of a second back of O”Ward’s Chevrolet. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver started in second during last year’s race.
Meyer Shank Racing’s David Malukas and seven-time Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing would end the session in fourth and fifth behind Andretti Global’s Colton Herta.
About halfway through the session, Herta drifted off course in Turn 12, ultimately stopping in front of the tire barrier with front wing damage.
The Andretti Global driver’s incident would prompt the first of a pair of red flags in the morning session.
Moments later, Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Kyffin Simpson would spin in Turn 11, prompting another stoppage in the session.
From there, the session continued uninterrupted. Among the remaining notables, last year’s race winner and Friday practice leader Alex Palou was tenth.
