Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus VeeKay started off his race day posting the fastest lap in the 30-minute warmup for this afternoon’s Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey.

VeeKay wheeled his No. 21 Chevrolet-powered entry to a best lap of 1m08.4096 (117.773mph) on the 2.238-mile, 11-turn WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, California. VeeKay starts 20th in the 95-lap race.

2023 race winner Scott Dixon was the quickest Honda in second, .042 of a second behind VeeKay’s best lap. Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Agustin Canapino returns to his No. 78 after missing Road America and was third in the warm-up. He rolls off 13th.

Road America pole winner Linus Lundqvist of Chip Ganassi Racing was the best rookie in fourth and starts 16th. Two-time winner Colton Herta of Andretti Global was fifth and starts fourth.

Points leader Will Power finished the 30-minute session in 24th and will start from 16th on the 27-car grid.

Today’s pole sitter Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was eighth and outside pole sitter Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global was sixth.

Shortly after posting the second-fastest time, Sting Ray Robb crashed in Turn 6. The A.J. Foyt Racing driver got loose and veered into the gravel trap before spinning and making heavy contact with the outside tire barrier.

Prior to the red flag, Robb’s teammate Santino Ferrucci and Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Romain Grosjean had their latest in a series of on-track scuffles. Ferrucci would lose five minutes of time on-track for unsportsmanlike conduct as a result of the incident but posted the tenth-best lap.

Robb would be checked and released from the infield care center. He finished 23rd in the warmup and is scheduled to start 25th.

Following a red flag lasting just over eight minutes, the remainder of the session was run under green flag conditions.
