After finishing second in Friday’s opening practice, Colton Herta would lead Saturday morning’s rain-filled 45-minute practice at Road America. The No. 26 Andretti Global entrant posted a best lap of 2m07.3027 (113.512 mph) on the 4.014-mile, 14-turn permanent road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
Team Penske’s Will power, 2016 winner at this track, was the fastest Chevrolet in second, 1.947 seconds off Herta’s Honda. Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen was best among the rookies in third. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard and Power’s teammate Scott McLaughlin rounded out the Top Five.
With rain moving into the area, drivers were forced to adapt to the changing weather.
Just over 10 minutes into the session, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou would spin off course and stop in the gravel trap adjacent to Turn 14. The red flag was brought out as the No. 10 was retrieved from the incident.
Palou, who led yesterday’s practice and has won two of the last three events at Road America, was 15th among 24 entries.
Teammate Scott Dixon, who won last week in Detroit and leads the points standings, was one of three drivers not to record a lap.
Jack Harvey of Dale Coyne Racing and Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Nolan, Siegel, substituting for Agustin Canapino, were the other drivers who did not complete a lap at speed.
Seven minutes after Palou’s issues, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Pietro Fittipaldi went off course in Turn 12. After causing the red flag, Fittipaldi would be given a five-minute penalty as Palou was.
Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood spun between the exit of Turn 14 and pit entrance, prompting another red flag.
The fourth and final red flag came when Palou stalled in Turn 1 following the resumption of the session once Kirkwood’s car was moved.
With rain expected to be a factor over the course of the day, qualifying will be an even more pivotal session for Sunday’s 55-lap XPEL Grand Prix at Road America.
