Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden was fastest in Sunday morning’s warmup for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. The Indianapolis 500 winner posted a best lap of 1m02.0463 (95.443 mph) in his Chevrolet-powered entry and starts third in the 100-lap race.
Pole winner Colton Herta of Andretti Global was the best Honda entry in second, .0184 of second behind Newgarden’s best time on the 1.645-mile, 9-turn street circuit.
The Chevrolets of Newgarden’s teammate Scott McLaughlin, who starts fourth and Arrow Mclaren’s Pato O’Ward, who starts 12th followed on the lap chart. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Pietro Fittipaldi was fifth and rolls off 15th in today’s race.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyffin Simpson was the best rookie of the session in ninth but starts last due to an engine change penalty. He qualified 23rd in yesterday’s session but will incur a six-position penalty for the engine change.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal, who turned the 10th-best lap in the session, will also drop six positions on the grid and starts 20th.
The lone red flag of the 30-mintue session came when the stalled Arrow McLaren entry of Theo Pourchaire was unable to retire after a Turn 1 lockup. The session ended under red flag conditions as the driver of the No. 6 was unable to retire his machine. The rookie was 13th on the speed chart and starts a career-best seventh in today’s race.
