Picking up where he left off in 2023, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou was fastest during Friday’s 75-mintue practice for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.

On the nine-turn, 1.645-mile temporary street circuit, the 2023 pole and race winner notched a best lap of 1m01.7210 (95.948mph). Palou enters the race with a 20-point lead in the standings over teammate Scott Dixon in their Honda entries.

After a heartbreaking runner-up finish at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward was best among the Chevrolets in second, .0105 of a second back of Palou’s best lap.

The Andretti Global duo of Colton Herta and Kyle Kirkwood were third and fourth with Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin in fifth.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen was the best rookie in 18th.

Starting the first of a pair of races behind the wheel of the No. 66, Meyer Shank Racing’s Helio Castroneves was 22nd. Tristan Vautier of Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing finished 27th as he makes his first INDYCAR appearance since 2017.

Dale Coyne Racing’s Jack Harvey made contact with the outside retaining wall in Turn 7. Harvey’s No. 18 entry sustained right-front suspension damage, calling a premature end to his opening practice. The remainder of the six minutes and change were completed without further incident.
