Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward turned the fastest lap of the day in today’s practice for the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 26th.

The 2022 runner-up boasted a fastest lap of 228.861 mph (39.3252 seconds) on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Yesterday’s practice leader Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske was second, .2673 of a second behind O’Ward’s best lap.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou was best among the Hondas in third behind the pair of Chevrolets. Andretti Global’s Colton Herta and 2023 winner Josef Newgarden rounded out the Top Five.

Late on Thursday morning, the first major incident of the week occurred. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Linus Lundqvist tagged the outside retaining wall on the entrance for Turn 2.

Lundqvist slid toward the infield, stopping on the back straightaway grass. The rookie climbed from his Dallara-Honda and was released from the infield care center shortly after.

Despite seeing his practice end prematurely, Lundqvist was seventh overall and best among the rookies.

Just before 4:00, 2022 race winner Marcus Ericsson spun off Turn 4.

The Andretti Global driver made heavy contact with the outside wall before spinning toward pit entrance. There, he contacted the inside wall and pit attenuator before stopping near pit entrance.

Ericsson climbed from his wrecked car almost immediately and would be released from the infield care center shortly after. During the caution, sprinkles were reported in the area, prompting another weather delay.

Following two intermittent green portions, the checkered flag was flown early.

Tomorrow, all 34 cars will have the boost turned up for their turbochargers. It will remain this way until qualifying is completed on Sunday afternoon.
