Chip Ganassi Racing continued their run of success on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.
Sophomore driver Marcus Armstrong was fastest during the final 30-minute warmup for today’s Sonsio Grand Prix.
Armstrong (1m09.8485-125.706) led the 27-car grid and starts eighth for this afternoon’s 85-lap race on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn circuit.
Following a disappointing qualifying effort of 24th, 2022 race winner and NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader Colton Herta of Andretti Global was second during the session.
Herta was .3829 of a second behind Armstrong’s fastest lap.
Rinus VeeKay of Ed Carpenter Racing, who wonthis race in 2021, was the fastest Chevrolet and starts 12th.
Pole and defending race winner Alex Palou was fourth behind his teammate. Graham Rahal, pole winner in the last race held at this venue, was fifth in his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing entry.
After making contact with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Pietro Fittipaldi on pit road, VeeKay was assesed a five-minute hold penalty.
Two weeks removed from his first podium, Linus Lundqvist of CGR was the best rookie in 12th.
After running here in 2023 with Meyer Shank Racing, Lundqvist makes a second appearance on a track for the first time in his career.
With less than two minutes remaining, Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward saw the engine in his machine let go. The red flag was brought out and the session was ended prematurely.
