Colton Herta leads frantic opening practice at IMS Road Course

2022 race winner Colton Herta was quickest during Friday morning’s practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.

The Andretti Global driver set fastest lap in the 75-minute session with a best lap of 1m09.2863 (126.726 mph). The NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader looks for his first win of 2024 in Saturday’s 85-lap race on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course.

Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Agustin Canapino was second, .085 of a second behind Herta’s best lap. The sophomore driver was best among the Chevrolets following the aforementioned Honda.

Team Penske’s Will Power and Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus VeeKay followed with Marcus Ericsson bookending the Top Five for Andretti.

Meyer Shank Racing’s Tom Blomqvist was best among the rookies in 15th.

Just over 15 minutes into the running, Newgarden spun in Turn 14. After a brief red flag, the session continued and Newgarden rreturned to the pit to serve a five-minute penalty.

Less than 10 minutes later, Graham Rahal pulled to pit out with reported engine issues.

Marcus Armstrong would prompt another red flag with engine issues of his own less than 15 minutes after Rahal.

Arrow McLaren rookie Theo Pourchaire would end the session with reported fuel pressure issues but stoped in Turn 12 with the rest of the field continuing on.
