2023 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach pole and race winner Kyle Kirkwood continued his recent success on street courses. Following this morning’s 45-minute practice, the Andretti Global driver was quickest in the session for tomorrow’s 85-lap race.
The Jupiter, Florida native posted a best lap of 1m06.4731 (106.581 mph) on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit. Teammate Colton Herta, who started on pole in 2022 and won the race here in 2021, was next, .0155 of a second back of Kirkwood’s best lap.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard and Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist completed a Top Four Honda sweep. Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin was the best Chevrolet-powered entry in fifth.
Friday’s practice leader Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren was 21st.
Despite going off-course into the Turn 9 runoff, Ed Carpenter Racing’s Christian Rasmussen was the fastest rookie in 16th. Théo Pourchaire (Arrow McLaren) and Nolan Siegel (Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing) were 19th and 23rd ahead of their INDYCAR debuts this weekend.
After making contact with the left-rear in Turn 8 early in the session, Will Power spun in the same area with less than 10 minutes remaining in the session. The two-time Long Beach winner was able to retire and continue back to the pits at the attention of his Team Penske crew.
A.J. Foyt Racing’s Santino Ferrucci and Meyer Shank Racing’s Tom Blomqvist also went off-course but sustained no major damage.
