Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden picked up where he left off following his 2023 victory at the Indianapolis 500 and the season-opening win at St. Petersburg. The 2017 and 2019 NTT INDYCAR SERIES Champion posted a best lap of 228.811 mph (39.3338 seconds) on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Arrow McLaren’s Kyle Larson, who makes his much-publicized attempt at the Indianapolis 500-Coke 600 Double next month, was second, best among the rookie drivers. Chip Ganassi Racing drivers Scott Dixon and Alex Palou were next, the fastest Hondas in the field. Newgarden’s teammate Scott McLaughlin would bookend the Top Five for Penske.
Linus Lundqvist of Chip Ganassi Racing was quickest among the rookies completing other races on the INDYCAR calendar in 11th.
Andretti leads Refresher/ROP
2020 Indianapolis 500 pole sitter Marco Andretti was quickest among the six drivers completing their Refresher or Rookie Orientation Program today. Following Andretti were fellow veteran drivers Katherine Legge and Pietro Fittipaldi. Legge’s last INDYCAR race was in last year’s Indianapolis 500 while Fittipaldi has only contested one points-paying event since his 2021 “500” debut.
Christian Rasmussen of Ed Carpenter Racing was best among three rookies completing their ROP, posting a best lap of 219.745 mph (40.9565 seconds) followed by Nolan Siegel and Kyffin Simpson.
In the limited on-track time all cars were allowed following the completion of the Orientation/Refresher programs, Andretti Global’s Colton Herta was fastest (225.907-39.8384 seconds). Dixon, the 2008 winner, was quickest among the five former winners to record a lap in the session and second overall (224.587-40.0772) Rasmussen was the fastest rookie (223.591-40.252) of four that recorded a lap.
Just after 4;00 p.m., the practice was called for the day.
