After starting on pole and leading 104 of 110 laps to win the 2022 event at Portland International Raceway, Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin was fastest in Saturday morning’s 45-minute practice for this weekend’s BitNile.com Grand Prix of Portland. He turned a best lap of 58.1516 seconds (121.586 mph).
McLaughlin’s teammate Josef Newgarden made it a 1-2 effort for Team Penske, finishing .1179 of a second back. After finishing 19th in Friday’s opening session, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon was third on the speed chart, best among the Honda entries.
On the heels of two consecutive victories, he will need to gain at least 25 points on teammate Alex Palou to remain in contention for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES Championship. Palou, who won from the pole in 2021, was fifth in the session.
Their rookie teammate Marcus Armstrong was seventh, best among the six drivers making their first INDYCAR appearance on the 1.964-mile, 12-turn Oregon permanent road course. Juri Vips of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, who is making his series debut, was 19th.
After teammate Christian Lundgaard was fastest in opening practice, Rahal Letterman Racing’s Graham Rahal was fourth in Practice 2.
Just over two-thirds of the way into the session, the stalled car of Sting Ray Robb in Turn 7 would prompt the first red flag of the morning. Robb’s No. 51 was retrieved by the AMR INDYCAR Safety. From there, practice continued uninterrupted to the checkered flag.
