Team Penske’s Will Power led the way during Saturday morning’s practice session at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The 2020 (Race 1) winner posted a best lap of 1m06.4905 (122.258 mph) on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn permanent road course in Lexington, Ohio.

Points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was the fastest Honda in seconds, .2506 of a second off Power and his Chevrolet’s best lap. Andretti Autosport’s Colton Herta was third with Friday’s practice leader Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren in fourth. Palou’s teammate and six-time Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon was fifth.

Marcus Armstrong of CGR continued leading the way among the four rookies in the field, posting the 15th-best lap during practice. After a handful of minor spins during Friday’s opening practice, it did not take long for the first major accident of the weekend to occur.

Less than seven minutes into the session, 2016 race winner Simon Pagenaud barrel rolled six and a half times in the Turn 4 runoff. The Meyer Shank Racing driver climbed from his battered race car and took the mandatory trip to the infield care center. He did radio to his team he was alright but his car had no brakes.

Before practice was over, MSR had begun preparing the backup car for Pagenaud to compete in.

Following a 10-minute red flag, the session was continued. 30 minutes later, the second red flag of the morning was brought out after Santino Ferrucci went off-course in Turn 12 and would need his A.J. Foyt Racing entry assisted back on course.

From there, the session continued without further interruption.
